Bulgaria

The first time I heard about Bulgaria, I was doing my bachelor and one of the girl in my class was Bulgaria. Nadia told me a little bit about her culture, and on the first day of Spring, she gave me a martenitsa. She explained that this small red and white bracelet was given to friends to welcome Spring. She also said that I should leave it on the first blossoming tree I would see. That part, I didn’t do because I wanted to keep the bracelet.

The second time was much later, when I was living in London. One of my housemate, Plamena, was from Bulgaria. She sometimes spoke about her country, some of their typical food and about roses. She was always smelling of roses and using rose-based beauty products. When she moved back to Plovdiv, her hometown, I decided to visit her.

And that was the first of several trips to Bulgaria. I fell in love with the country, its complicated history, its food and its various sceneries. It has pretty much everything: mountains, seaside, forests… I started with Plovdiv and Sofia, and continued with Koprishtitsa, Veliko Tarnovo, Kazanlak, Varna, Nessebar…

Also, Bulgarians are very friendly and most of the young people speak English. Good food, interesting history, beautiful places, great people, what are you waiting for?
