Last year, I did a trip around the world. After going to London, I headed to Peru. I had been dreaming of seeing Machu Picchu. But there were also a few other places that had gotten my attention, like the Rainbow Mountains.
Rainbow Mountains
These mountains are called like that because they are covered with stripes of colours. They are composed of different types of sediments (sandstone, halite, gravel, clay and other minerals) that change colours when in contact with certain environments, and the various layers of sediments produce this stunning aspect of “rainbow”.
Breathtaking… Literally!
It really felt like an adventure, because to have this view, you need to walk up for quite some time, and it’s very tiring due to the high altitude. From the very beginning, I felt short of breath. So, even if I’m a bit scared of riding a horse, I chose that option to climb closer to the top of the mountain. It was very stressful, the horse was struggling a bit, right near a cliff. My brave horse’s name was Viento. We finally arrived to a stop and, trembling, I got on my feet and felt much safer. But I didn’t regret doing it at all.
However, I was not at the top yet. Indeed, I still had to climb some more, and it took me a very long time, because of the high altitude. I had never experienced something like that, this impressionof being extremely weak. I had to stop every few steps to catch my breath and rest my legs. The lack of air and the pressure are quite something. I finally made it to the top with a Canadian friend I had met that morning. There were a lot of dogs chilling in the sun, looking very relaxed.
We enjoyed the view before battling some Instagramers to take a few pictures of us and remember that day.
