The Charming Town Of Český Krumlov

Czech Republic is a beautiful country, and I’m not just talking about Prague. There are many other cities worth a visit, and one of my favorites is Český Krumlov (pronounced “Tsheskee Krumlof”). I spent two nights there in April 2016 and absolutely loved it!

Český Krumlov: A Medieval Town

Český Krumlov is a small medieval town that feels very safe and is easy to explore on foot. Its historical center is UNESCO-listed, and for good reason. Every little street is simply too charming for words!

To get a better sense of the city, I joined a walking tour called “Wiseman Free Tour“. I really enjoyed it, partly because our guide Jan was surprised that I was French since “I didn’t have a French accent”, and partly because the tour itself was genuinely interesting and fun. Overall, it was a great way to learn useful and intriguing facts about Český Krumlov and its history, and also a good opportunity to ask about the best places to eat and go out.

Lunch at Krcma Marketa

Krcma Marketa

My personal favorite was a restaurant right by the castle called Krcma Marketa. Stepping inside truly felt like traveling back in time.

Indeed, the decorations were medieval, the staff wore period-appropriate costumes, and the room was warmed by open fireplaces. It had started to snow outside, so finding this cozy spot felt like discovering a real safe haven.

The food lived up to the atmosphere too. I had chicken stuffed with bacon and cheese, served with grilled vegetables, all enjoyed next to a fireplace with a candle flickering on my table.

Honey Cake And Other Delicacies

Český Krumlov has several other bars and restaurants with great atmosphere, food, and drinks.

For instance, make sure to try some local Czech specialties, like honey cake or Krumlov cookies. Personally, I was not blown away by the sweets and found myself preferring the savory dishes, but it is still worth giving them a try!

A Bright Castle

Last but not least, the Český Krumlov Castle is strikingly colorful and displays a fascinating mix of architectural styles, reflecting the many different periods during which it was built.

It also offers great views over the town and sits within a large garden. To be honest, the weather was too cold for me to fully enjoy my visit, and it was a little too early in the season for the flowers to be in bloom. That said, I still went for a short walk around the grounds and had a lovely time. It is definitely a spot worth coming back to in warmer weather!

The Castle Tower

London Frenchy

My name is Coline, and I’m French. I come from a not so small, but not so big city in France, and I have lived in various countries and cities. I stayed for 3 years in London (UK), for 3 months in Vicenza, for 6 months in Reggio Emilia and for 6 months Bologna (Italy). I also spent 3 months in Bilbao and 4 months in Alicante (Spain). Right now, I’m back in France.
