I had a blast in Zagreb and I was really excited to visit Split and the nearby national parks. I felt like making friends was going to be as easy in Split as in the capital. Travelers were all very happy to be there and just wanted to have a good time.
Making Friends Right From The Start
In Split, it really didn’t take long before I started making friends. After getting off the bus, I went to the tourist center to ask where the Tchaikovsky hostel was. A few seconds later, a girl also entered the tourist center. I was outside, getting ready to walk to the hostel, when that same girl came to me and said “Are you going to the Tchaikovsky hostel?”. She was staying there too. We went there together and funnily enough, we ended up in the same room. Some would say it was fate!
For those who have been following me, that girl was Ekta. She was from India and we kept in touch. When I did my trip around the world in 2018, she invited me to her place to visit Mumbai. And that’s why I decided to visit India.
Back to 2016 and to my trip to Split: after settling in, we went for a hike on the Marjan hill and had ice-cream. We didn’t climb to the top, but still had a great view of the city. Then, I went for a walking tour on my own, but I met Ekta again for dinner.
Meeting More Friends In Split
On the next day, we went to the Krka national park. We met Mariette, an American girl with Lebanese origins, and Anita, an Australian girl. We all spent the day together and, when we came back to Split, we went to a restaurant. We were all traveling alone, but became friends for the day (or more).
Later on that day, I went further up on the Marjan hill with Mariette. It was quite steep, but the view was worth the effort. In the evening, we met again with all the girls in a bar.
Why Making Friends in Croatia in Easy
Anita said that she was also going to Dubrovnik after Split.
That’s why it worked so well in Croatia: tourists pretty much all visit the same cities (Zagreb-Split-Dubrovnik or Dubrovnik-Split-Zagreb), and it’s fun to meet them again on the way!
I couldn’t find any evidence of this, but I think I met again with Ngaire, the New Zealander that I had met in Zagreb, and I had dinner with her, Ekta and Anita.
