Songs, Memories And Feelings

I couldn’t live without music. It helps me go through the day, deal with my emotions (whether it is by screaming my anger, having a good cry or just finding the words) and pass the time when I’m on the train or bus. Some songs, I feel them so deeply that whenever I hear them, I go back in time and remember exactly what I was doing. Here are some of them. You don’t choose what sticks to your mind, so excuse me if some of them are not the best. They don’t reflect my very eclectic tastes, I swear.

Music And Memories: Songs In My Head

Johny, A Song By Sofi Tukker

I discovered this song by Sofi Tukker just before going to Turkey and so, it was in my ears during the whole trip: in the streets of Istanbul, in the jeep driving through the vineyards… Even when I was not listening to it, I had it in my head. And, in Ankara, in my friend’s flat, the title “Batshit” by the same band was on her TV.

Whenever I hear this song, I think of the jeep in the vineyards.

Party In The USA By Miley Cyrus

This memory is not linked to a fancy party, but to a really fun one. Imagine an evening during Winter, a few girls eating potatoes, pumpkin and cream, wearing clothes that looked nearly like pajamas, singing and dancing to a stupid yet catchy song.

My first master’s degree was really hard and I don’t remember many parties, but this one, very simple, comes up in my mind every time I listen to that song. It bring a warm feeling of belonging.

Scared To Run By Alex Adams

A small concert room full of people in London. Not the first show. People seemed to know the guy. He comes on stage, wearing some weird costume. The singer has large shoulders and is a big guy. We expect some kind of hard rock.

Not at all.

He starts to sing in this tiny voice. And we laugh a little, surprised. We think of Michael Jackson. And the more he sings the more we respect him. For sure, the guy has a strange voice, but he mastered it! And he sounds really good. Also, he’s a great performer. Little, but powerful voice!

Send Me On My Way By Rusted Roots

We go further back in time, back when I was a child. My little brother and I were doing the chores while singing and dancing to the rhythm of this song. I feel super happy and nostalgic when I hear this song.

Songs With Deep Feelings

Save Me By Listenbee

This was at the end of my time in London. I was really tired, I was struggling financially and I felt lonely. Whenever I hear this song, I feel incredibly alone and I see myself standing and holding the bar in the tube. I guess I had strong emotions at that precise moment and of all songs, this is the one that represented them the most.

Even if it’s not a fun feeling, it was necessary to find the strength to move on, leave my beloved London and find a path that suited me best.

Empty By Olivia O’Brian, A Song That Makes Me Want To Cry

I had discovered this song a few days before and I was listening to it a lot when I learnt that my grandmother had died. After, I continued listening to it, the lyrics sort of felt adequate to mourn.

To this day, when I hear this song, I see myself holding my tears in front of the computer.

Summer Vibe By Walk Off The Earth

We were a big group of friends from everywhere in the world at Walk Off The Earth’s concert. It ended with this song and us singing loudly. It’s a very positive memory. I have rarely felt that happy in my life.

Most of Walk Off The Earth’s songs are very cheerful, in case you want to check them out.
